Jennifer Aniston on David Letterman, 12/18/08, part 2:
Jennifer Aniston had a somewhat awkward interview on David Letterman last night. Her legs looked incredible, and she wore a super short dress just like her last appearance on the show two years ago. That was the main redeeming feature of an otherwise shaky interview that made me uncomfortable for her at points. It wasn’t a disaster, but she just sort of stumbled through and Dave kept pressing her. They had a strange rapport and only partially warmed up to each other at the end, when Jen presented Dave with the tie she wore draped over her chest in her now-infamous GQ shoot. It was too short for him and he joked that it was a juniors tie.
It seemed the plan was to cover the public interest in Aniston’s personal life, but either they didn’t prepare enough ahead of time, they didn’t mesh well enough, or Dave took it in a direction Aniston wasn’t comfortable with. She started off telling a story about a mean Russian teacher she had in high school at the “Fame” school in California and it kind of went downhill from there.
On her friends
Dave: Do… a large group of friends and family come to your home?
Jennifer: I have a large group of friends and family, yes, I do. They come to my home.
Dave: Can you give me a number – ball park?
Jennifer: Oh gosh, it depends on who I’m talking to that week. I would say, ball park there’s always those ten good solids. As you get older, the number gets smaller and you realize… you just don’t have enough time. Time is precious.
Dave: Do you find yourself being closer to newer friends or closer to older friends?
Jennifer: Both. I have friends from 25 years ago, you know – when I was born. [laughs]
On people prying into her personal life
Dave: It seems like people are always wanting to know about your private life and stuff. How did that happen… why do people always want to know more stuff?
Jennifer: I don’t know [laughs] just ask yourself why you asked the question. People get creative. At a press junket they’ll always figure out a way to wiggle in the personal question….
Like with Marley and Me, this one person says ‘In this movie, you are a mother of three, and the wife of a man. Does this, you know, inspire you to want to have three children and be the wife of a man?’ I’m going ‘If it wasn’t for this movie that seed would never have been planted, thank you.’
On John Mayer
Dave: People do care [about your personal life.] I want to know but I’m trying not to ask.
Jennifer: I think it’s all been said at this point.
Dave: For example, I do know who you’re dating. [shows Aniston his daily briefing on the desk.] John Mayer… can I ask you questions about John Mayer.
Jennifer: We’ll see, what do you got there?
Dave: Where did you meet?
Jennifer: We met at a party.
Dave: What kind of party.
Jennifer: It was a costume party.
Dave: Was it really?
Jennifer: No, but that would have been funny…
Dave: A Hollywood party… who was there… who hosted the party?
Jennifer: This was Brian Lord who was one of the bigwigs at CAA.
Dave: Is he still there?
Jennifer: Yeah….
Dave: I can’t even go any farther with this. All I care is that you and the guy are fine…
On being comfortable in her body:
Dave: Paul was saying that you have never been more comfortable with your body than you are now. Is that true?
Jennifer: That is actually true.
Dave: Was there a time that you were ever uncomfortable in your body.
Jennifer: I think when you get older you get sort of comfortable in your own skin, don’t you?
Dave: Are you speaking metaphorically or physically?
Jennifer: I think all of it… one leads to the other. Feeling good inside leads to feeling good outside.

I wonder what happened and why the interview went so poorly. Dave even kind of ruined the end of the movie Aniston is promoting by using some negative adjectives to describe it. Usually Letterman does a decent job with his guests and tries to make the conversation flow but that was just painful. What do you guys think? Was it an ok interview, did Dave bungle it, was it Aniston’s fault or was it just that they didn’t get along?
